After completing her BA in HR Management and Spanish at Leeds University, Charlotte began her career as a Management Trainer for the local equivalent of ‘Outward Bound’ in Sri Lanka, where she worked with a wide range of clients. Not your average training company, she was regularly found running through rain forests and paddy fields, video camera in hand, facilitating experiential learning activities before leading a video-based reflective debrief session.

Living through the 2004 Southeast Asia Tsunami, Charlotte extended her time in Sri Lanka where she worked as an English Teacher and Professional Skills Trainer at the British Council before moving with them to Oman and finally Morocco, where she also completed a long distance MA in Education and International Development through the Institute of Education at UCL.

Returning to the UK in 2010, Charlotte has since worked in training, learning and development within the charity sector, most recently at VSO, where she was responsible for driving the quality of L&D activities across a consortium of eight global organisations, operating in over thirty countries. In addition to designing and delivering staff and partner training workshops, Charlotte monitored the quality assurance of volunteer training across the consortium. She has a real passion for keeping learning fresh and challenging the status quo, most recently developing a range of innovative resources, processes and systems including peer-peer virtual learning spaces and audio-visual resources.

Through the Clifton StrengthsFinder, Charlotte identified her top two strengths to be ‘learner’ and ‘developer’, so she’s really excited to take up her role as Acting Head of Learning & Development at The Smarty Train, where she manages learning and development across the business, working in partnership with client teams to ensure alignment of business objectives and learner needs, and to deliver results in an engaging way.

Charlotte is inspired by adventure and loves a challenge. She has cycled from London to the South of France, climbed Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador, and is currently training to run the coastline of Jersey. This year she is doing one #micro-adventure every month. In January she spent a very cold night in a Scottish Bothy and in February she’s planning to bivvy (google it if you’re not sure…) on Ditchling Beacon for a 5pm-9am mid-week micro-adventure. When not running, hiking or cycling, Charlotte can be found jazz singing at venues in and around London.

Strange but true…

While living in Morocco, Charlotte was an extra in the Matt Damon film ‘Green Zone’ – playing the role of an off-duty soldier in Iraq.
