James joined The Smarty Train as Managing Director in October 2017. As Managing Director, James is responsible for the day to day running of The Smarty Train, as well as implementing our growth strategy.

James started his career at Deloitte where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2007. After qualifying, James joined EY where he specialised in Corporate Finance for the next 4 years. In his final year at EY, James was seconded to the UK&I Leadership team as part of the accelerated leadership program, working alongside the COO, CFO and Managing Partner for Talent. During this secondment, James gained significant experience of how the business recruited, trained and retained its staff, and the vital importance talent management plays in its growth.

After spending almost 5 years with EY, James joined Norman Broadbent plc as Group CFO/COO. James was responsible for running the finance and operations, including talent management. This covered everything from recruitment, on boarding and induction, training and development and reward. During this time, James was voted by The Financial Director as one of the brightest 35 talents in business under 35.

James graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Geography degree.

Prior to entering the corporate world, James was an international hockey player!
