Immersive Skills Sessions


As part of their new induction redesign, M&S sought to invest in their new graduates by creating dedicated time to explore and develop key mindsets that would set them up for success on the Programme.

 The Smarty Train (TST) were asked to design sessions to accelerate the induction experience for a select group of graduates and train the Early Careers Team to deliver these high-impact sessions for future cohorts, preparing their Early Talent to become not only future retail leaders, but also digital change agents within the organisation.

Working closely with M&S stakeholders to identify and understand the key elements of the Enterprise Programme, TST designed four highly immersive and sticky learning experiences, each containing a unique scenario selected to bring each session to life and accelerate the graduates’ learning.

Using props, sets and costumes, graduates were transported away from a standard classroom setting into four interactive environments, including a Centre for Disease Control, a science laboratory, and a space station. One activity featured a selection of M&S shoes in each of the graduates’ sizes, challenging them to experience what it’s really like to “walk in a customer’s shoes”.

In each session, participants were given dedicated time to apply and relate the learning outcomes to their roles, further grounding the learning in graduates’ own realities and specific situations at M&S.


Following the experience design, M&S engaged TST to design and deliver a comprehensive “Train the Trainer” programme to allow the M&S Early Careers team to run sessions themselves for future cohorts.
