Empowering Diverse Audiences

Challenge:

NACME is a US-based non-profit organisation committed to empowering a diverse American workforce. They approached The Smarty Train to design and deliver a face-to-face experience for engineering students from underrepresented backgrounds in Washington DC, USA, as part of their national annual conference. With the objective of upskilling students in essential workplace skills and behaviours, NACME wanted their student participants to realise the unique impact their strengths and knowledge can have in the workplace.

TST's solution needed to provide participants with the opportunity to feel a sense of accomplishment as they applied new skills to solve real-world problems.

“Absolutely amazing experience. The people were amazing, industry was fantastic, and connections were awesome.”

- NACME Participant

Solution:

After extensive immersion and research into NACME and the target audience, we created a custom 24-hour hackathon experience with a twist. To push students outside their comfort zones and help them fully appreciate their reach and potential, the hackathon was about more than coding. It guided them and tested their abilities to innovate, collaborate, problem solve, and apply kinaesthetic learning.

The NACME Hackathon took place in Washington DC over 24 hours, with students working in teams to design solutions to real-world problems using cutting-edge collaborative tools. The teams were brought together at key points in the process by an experienced facilitator who delivered learning on the essential skills that students needed to deploy to solve their challenges.

To truly connect the students to the real world problems they were solving, we invited experts from NACME partner organisations to attend. The experts spoke about how they were innovating and pushing boundaries at their organisations, showing students real-life applicability of the skills and career paths that await them, while also also helping students with their solutions, answering subject-specific questions, suggesting new ways of thinking, and empowering these diverse future leaders.

Impact:

+ 100% of participants better realise the unique impact their strengths and knowledge can have on a project/team

+ 100% of participants agreed the event taught them new essential workplace skills

+ 98% of participants would recommend the experience to another student
